The word Riknakem comes from two Iluko words, Rikna and Nakem. Rikna means feelings, but Nakem eludes translation. Roughly, Nakem means character/personality/consciousness. It also denotes the concept of “loob” in Filipino philosophy.

Dear Mr. Yumul,
Please publish your credentials. Any self-respecting journalist would do well not to hide where he graduated, where he worked before, what are his published works, what recognition he got, what groups he belong to. All these information establish his credibility and accountability.
Thank you.
Thanks for the suggestion, rowan.
For now, you might want to click the FEATURE page. Hope that would give you bits and pieces about me, and assure you that am not hiding anything.
I see that your interests are on the church.

Jiru, you may approach me in person about your research. You might want to see the news stand at the east side of 5 sisters. Suffice it to say that Ilocos Times is the only legit paper in town. The others are phonies.
sir,

Mr. Yumul,
Hello, I’m a student from ADMU and my english professor, Mrs. Alona Guevarra, referred me to you. She says that my paper on Filipino adolescents and their lack of concern for Philippine politics lands under your field of expertise.
If it would not be too much to ask of you, Mr. Yumul, I’d like to interview you via email concerning my paper.
Thank you!
I’ll be happy to oblige, joshua.
Send it then to herdiology@yahoo.com
Hi. I recently came across Ianree’s article about gaying the sayamedy. It really touched me. I like it. The link was actually given by my sister when I told her about a certain problem I had with males stereotyping and alluding something negative to being gay. I will share your blog with my students, gay and not, for them to be enlightened. Thanks much! More power.
Sir Herdy,
May I add another scrabble words of riknakem? It is also compost of two words= ‘riknak’ and ‘akem’. These are your own possessions, your rikna (riknak) as an emotional writer and your akem as the moderator of this site.
Wow, you have a way with words, asiong, amazing. Akem means role. Feelings are translated to responsible carrying out of roles.
nakem is more of a wisdom i think
i used to hear my pop telling me to “ag nakem kammet a”.
It could also mean that way, but the exact translation of wisdom is “sirib.”
No ibaga ti natataengan nga ‘maaddaan ka koma iti nakem’. They want to coax you to be truly responsible and cultivate good virtues. Ti nanakman nga tao ket nasayaat ti ugali na; nasalimetmet; naurnos; managtulong; etc.
And when you commit a mistake and suffer because of it, the oldies would say, “pagnakmam.”
Congratulations, Herdy, for your achievement kas maysa kadagiti kangrunaan a blogger iti Filipinas. I am proud of you. Adtoy ti sangabotelia a basi-Lioac nga impasangoda a kas champagne kadagiti pasken ti Malacanan idi panawen daydi Apo Elpidio Quirino, ti umuna nga Ilocano a presidente ti Filipinas kalpasan ti World War 2.
Husto amin a naibaga iti ngato a kaipapanan ti balikas a nakem. But if you go to componential analysis of meaning, adda iti tengnga (center) dagiti balikas a consciousness, maturity, will. Iti lawlawda, isu dagiti fine atrributes/positive traits ti tao nga addaan kadagiti tallo a balikas a naitalimeng kenkuana. “Sirib, kinalaing, kinaimbag” are in the periphery. Nakem defines the Ilocano male, aglalo dagiti kunkunada a malalaki, more than the female counterpart. But, of course, my claim can be challenged by your Manang Imee. Haha.
Thank you, Uncle, for the new learning. Idol ko po kayo, and proudnak a lolokayo. If only I can have half of your trilingual prowess, I’d be happy. :)) Cheers!
you are the writer par excellence, herdy. iwagaywaymo latta ti nagan!
ang laki mng tanga sir… kng dka man makita sa kulungan, be prepare to die moron… alam mo ba kinakalaban mo tanga? kaya maraming namamatay na kagaya nyo dahil d nagiisip. banat ng banat d alam kng anng kahihinatnan sa buhay nyong mga tanga…
Maawatak ti kayat mo nga saw-en, kabsat. Agyamanak ta napudno ka iti kapapanunutam ken ti riknam. Kaaduan na ket kontento ti biag nga awan ti nauneg nga panagpanunut no isu met la ti dalan nga kayat nga suroten. You dare to ask the hard questions and I applaud you for that. You remind of the lyrics to a song “Challenge what the future holds…you gotta be bold, you gotta be bad…go ahead release you fears… Stay bold and stay true to yourself!
Let’s dance to the tune of that song then. Thank you. :))
herdy adingko,
sagpaminsan padasem ti agsangal iti iluko. tapno maikkan hustisia daytoy nagan ti blogmo a riknakem. ta awanen ti kadadaksan a mapasamak atrehedia iti maysa a mannurat a pulos diman la makasangal iti uray puted la koma a kapanunotan iti bukodna a lengguahe. nabasak daytay librom “the herd(y) mentality.” mayat ngem iti bukodko a panagraman, kurang ti gasangna. ta awan uray maysa la koma a naisurat iti iluko. ikkam ida iti impierno, awan ti at-atanna. manong errol l. abrew
