Church unwittingly endorses vice

ash-tray

I visited the Catholic Church in Batac recently, and found this among the souvenir stuff they were selling at the parish office.  While I would not say that smoking is evil and that smokers are baaad folks, I feel uncomfortable with this apparent endorsement of the vice.  I would appreciate your thoughts on it.

“It would have been perfectly okay if it were a candle holder, but an ashtray?!?  And the name of the Blessed Virgin is even there.  That’s so off,” say my friends.

I hope well-meaning parishioners like dear Tita Lita, top poster in this blog, would find a way to resolve this outrage.

  1. if you ask me i would not have bought any.couldn’t they have sold school stuff, religious stuff, with the church logo at discount prices which will even promote more devotion ? as i mentioned before when i was there my dad saw somebody smoking and he asked where his cigarettes were and what did we do with them when we cleaned his room? i immediately stop his idea.seeing someone with a cigarette is an invitation and i think ashtrays whether you use it or not or just for decoration will always be “a tray for ashes “cigarette that is…

    1. Yes, the parish is sending a wrong message. Hope they will rethink about continuing to sell ash trays.

And tita lita is correct. When there is an ashtray, then people are invited to smoke. In our house, there is no ash tray, So guests automatically knows that smoking is not allowed inside.

    1. Some bishops and many priests smoke, and I don’t mind. But to sell ashtrays… inside the church?! That’s too much.

  3. here in the States almost all states have banned smoking in restaurants, hospital, prisons, public institutions etc..second hand smoke is even worse. those “cancer sticks” should be eradicated completely.there are so many pollutants, carcinogenic things popping up daily .everytime we turn around there is always things on the papers etc that causes cancer so why can’t we help with something we have control of that is to keep the air that we breath free of smogs and above all free from cigarette smokes?

    1. One time, I hailed a tricycle, but one passenger who was already inside, was smoking. He did not even have the courtesy to put it off. Hindi na ako sumakay.

I used to smoke and I quit. Dati, the vice was already controlling me, esp. after meals. Now, I get irritated, even by secondary smoke.

  4. Here in the netherlands as well. All buildings, hospitals, restaurants, cafe’s (don’t know about the cannabis cafes), trains stations, schools, smoking has also been banned. Smokers has to go outside on a designated smoking placce when they want to smoke.

    1. That’s the way it should be, Donna.

  5. when the vice of a sort whether it is gambling ,drinking or smoking is controlling the person it is time to quit and guarantee you they will be glad that they did.

    1. Tita, yosi is SIgarilYO. Binabaliktad because it’s a 70s-80s coinage. Like Erpat for Father and Ermat for Mother.

  6. we watched my mom’s funeral put in dvd by a grandnephew that i brought and then cholos docu on diego and gabriela silang and pretty model and the song ta nagsaway a pintasmo awan umasping and i was singing with it and the 2 were laughing so hard and wonders how i know it and then i sang o naraniag a bulan ,dungdunguenkanto and songs that they do not know about. i am surprised..did we come from the same parents?

    1. What can we do? You’re the star. “O naraniag a bulan, dungdunguenkanto” But these are very old songs, am surprised your sisters don’t know them.

  7. today is good friday there already.my mom did always want us to be serious ..no laughing ,no talking loud ,no swearing just prayed and fasted..

  8. sorry it is not good friday yet it is only thursday night. i come to virginia and get confuse already. i am territorial like a cat.i donot adapt easily and cannot sleep in other peoples house.

    1. hahaha, this made me laugh, tita. You are territorial like a cat, … but loyal, protective, smart, and fun like a good dog.

  9. i can’t help it when it comes to street lingo i am an ignoramus.good friday i will be going to school with my sister and spend time with the” mentally challenged”.it will be an interesting day..if you can’t beat them join them…

Ika nga eh “charity begins at home”. So if the parents are smokers, how will they tell their own children not to smoke?

    1. Oo nga, kaya nga when I worked with a developmental organization for children e hindi kami tumatanggap ng donation, no matter how big, from corporations that produce cigarettes and alcohol.

  11. Donna, I watched The Reader yesterday. It’s not exactly the appropriate movie to watch on Maundy Thursday, hehe… explicit

    1. hello, I think the Pasyon is really a dwindling tradition. I bet some families still do it but, at large, it is lost.

  12. Hahaha, ngayon lang ako nakarinig na ganyang pakulo sa simbahan, well maybe their very first aim is to raise funds for their charity. But it sounds so strange. di ba ciggarette smoking is dangerous to our health??? By the way sir, advance happy birthday… Paburger naman jan!!! jejeje

  13. Personally, there is nothing wrong with that. It is sophomoric if not stupid assumption that selling ash trays encourages smoking! Not all who buys ash tray smoke. They buy it siguro as a remembrance or to help the finances of the parish.

Selling liquor and tobacco products is worse because of the possible evil outcomes of these.

Our sensitivity on a minor issue like this should be translated into action by reinventing ourselves in adhering values in our midst.

  15. RELIGION

  16. I was so disappointed to the Catholic Church in Batac because of this souvenir stuff they were selling at the parish office. I’m agreeing with sir Herdy Yumol about this article. I would not say that smoking is evil and that smokers are bad folk, I feel uncomfortable with this apparent endorsement of vice.im not saying that I know how to smoke but as youths I know that some of Pilipino people who smoke is just to relax them or a pastime but about this matter my god I’ve know that catholic church that serve as a guide of that people who are listening to their worlds. What if they will try to smoke . . .?! Humph… the government or people will have a problem of there health. Government warns the Pilipino people that smoking is dangerous to our health. But Catholic Church in Batac endures this vice that was so disappointed. A friend of mine says “Nagpangit met etan katoliko pay a nakuna agilako da ketdin ti souvenir a kastan.. di namaymayat pay no rosary or santo ditan ngem ask tray?! My god! mangibabain da. Iso dapay ti man endores’en a mayat nukwa agsigarilyo! And the blessed virgin is even there. . That’s so off”.

    kakahiya naman

  19. nakakadismaya lang. it’s like indirect promoting cigarettes. the church who teaches about their God that God gives us life. the church should teach its followers that they must take care of theirself to respect God pero paano kung pati mismo ang mga Church leaders ay naninigarilyo.
Selling ashtray in this church is disturbing to me though I’m not catholic because it has a huge followers, these followers might think that it’s okay to take cigarettes and they might get addicted to it at masira ang kanilang buhay.
i don’t know why they have to sell souvenirs like this, why not Bible? at dapat donations na lang ang kunin nila para mahikayat ang mga followers nito na mabasa ang nilalaman ng Biblia.

  20. i can’t understand why they made that kind of souvenir they are more creative thing that they made related to religion…we can appreciate more and buy that souvenir if it is related to the place that we visit….but i thing they support the no smoking policy that’s why they made that kind of souvenir…

  21. What the heck! An ash tray? I can’t believe it. As if they were promoting such vice. But hey! Let us not be conclusive about it, maybe they have reasons like, if ever time you use the ash tray you would see the church. Then eventually you will realize that smoking is bad to the health. So, if ever you use it again, you would not continue doing so.

  22. Selling an ashtray inside the church is definitely a bad thing to do.Why ashtrays? Why dont they sell tobacco……..Its the same din naman eh.Church symbolizes god so why they are doing business inside it?Is it the purpose of the church that instead of praying we can do buying na lang. But why do people buy this kind of stuff
inside the church? Why?Its because people use it as a display in their house that if you look at it they seem so religious. Is that what make people religious?

  23. I don’t think selling an ashtray for a souvenir is a good idea. For me it can destroy the image of the church. Oh well, maybe they think that most of the catholic people do smoke so they think it’s a good idea to sell an ashtray for souvenir.^_^ and even I can see “mga pari” smoking in front of the aglipayan church..haha

  24. Would it be too bad if I ask what are the lessons teach in the school for the clergy? Some facts and lessons are distorted. Buti sa na kung hindi sila pinaniniwalaan. Blind and unthinking citizens thinks their right so. huu ! linsyak naman oo.
